Postcolonial Catan

This article takes Edward Said’s orientalism paradigm, originally applied to XIXth century novels and paintings about the Near and Middle-East, and copy-pastes it on contemporary boardgames about other parts of the world – but it’s not that different from what Said himself was starting to do in Culture and Imperialism. Then Mars and Venus are brought into it, following a hint given by Victor Segalen in 1908, in his Essay on exoticism. Last, it addresses the past, which won’t be colonized until we design a time travel machine.
